Roof Membrane In Thermoplastic Materials – 5 Key Advantages

When selecting a roof membrane material for a commercial project, there are several different options to consider, each offering advantages and drawbacks.

Thermoplastic roof membranes set themselves apart from other commercial roofing systems like EPDM, Modbit, SEBS and Green roofs with their unique characteristics and benefits. A durable material with a high-temperature tolerance, thermoplastic roofing membranes are among the fastest growing in the industry.

Thermoplastic membranes are most typically either Thermoplastic Olefin (TPO) or Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC).

TPO is a blend of polypropylene, ethylene propylene and is often reinforced with polyester. Sheets of TPO can contain UV absorbers, colorant, flame retardants or other add-ins to achieve required physical properties. Often white, TPO sheets can range in width from 6 to 12 feet and have varying thickness, usually 40 to 100 mil.

PVC is a blend of ethylene and chlorine, and the roofing material is made of two PVC layers with a polyester reinforcement scrim placed in between. Additives in the top layer help provide UV resistance, and it also contains plasticizers for added flexibility.

Thermoplastic roofing membranes have many advantages that should be considered when selecting your next roofing application.

Cost

Thermoplastic membranes can be less expensive than other roofing options. TPO especially is seen as a lower cost solution when it is time to repair a commercial roofing system.

The lower cost of thermoplastic options doesn’t mean the membranes wear out too soon. In fact, PVC and TPO single ply membranes can last 15 to 20-plus years (with regular inspection) without needing significant repairs.

Durability

Thermoplastic membranes offer excellent durability. The single ply membranes are flexible, allowing them to withstand punctures or tears as well as many chemicals, including oils and animal fats.

TPO and PVC are good options for combating pooling water and are resistant to bacterial growth, both of which can lead to membrane deterioration.

Energy Efficient

One of the long-standing benefits of thermoplastic roofing membranes is their ability to control energy costs, due to their heat resistant properties.

Often colored black, white or gray, white TPO and PVC roofs are highly reflective, repelling UV rays away from the building, leading to lower cooling expenses.

Weather Resistance

Thermoplastic roofing membranes, like Hyload’s Alproof with Fleece, are excellent for environments where the weather is going to play a significant factor on a roof’s longevity.

Thermoplastic membranes help to protect buildings in situations with heavy rain or hail and are even the option of choice in hurricane zones, having proven they can help withstand incredible winds, rain, and even debris that come with the strongest storms.

Ease of Installation

The last advantage of a thermoplastic membrane like TPO or PVC is the relatively easy installation process. Membranes can be mechanically attached, ballasted or adhered using adhesives.

Due to their chemical properties, thermoplastic membranes do not contain cross-linking molecules and flow when heated. During the installation process, membrane sheets can be welded together, creating a durable, watertight seal. As a result, they’re a lower liability for installers.

When taking these advantages into account, a thermoplastic membrane might be the right solution for your next commercial roofing replacement.
